I make cyanotypes, lumen prints, anthotypes, chlorophyll prints and chemigrams using a combination of digital negatives and contact-printed botanical specimens, experimenting with different ingredients and recipes to create my own unique light-sensitive emulsions.

I have previously been involved in several local art projects, setting up the TAP Gallery & Studios in Southend-on-sea (now the Old Water Works), directing and co-ordinating the Artside Festival in Southend and running local workshops. I am based in Leigh-on-sea.

With a history of jewellery and silversmithing; metal is my medium of choice. I specialise in the colouring and patination of metals; a process that involves a beautiful mix of science and art which satisfies my dual-minded persona. The result is a beautiful and unique verdigris patina that covers my work, giving the metal depth and pattern.

The collection is in two parts; ‘For Misters and Little Misters’. The first part is a modern take on Victoriana anthropomorphology and is entitled ‘The modern Gentleman’. The second part is entitled ‘All That Creeps and Crawls’; inspired by my fascination in insects.

My paintings explore location and time spent in place, with particular interest in structure, form, light and space. This body of work explores my emotional response and sensations felt whilst spending time in two West Country gardens.  By abstracting from nature, I explore colour and form, using paint intuitively, enjoying the brush marks & multi layered processes of my painting, never sure what the end result might be; but hoping to be surprised by it.

My work is an embodiment of a passion for the handmade. The traditional craft of hand-weaving is accompanied by a modern use of colour and proportion to create panels which are reminiscent of the styles produced by the Bauhaus. I weave with silk that I dye myself, this messy process produces an undeniable vibrancy, even when applied to a subtle palette. Through my work I always hope to promote the idea of slow design, to encourage people to love craft and invest in beautiful textiles.

This is typical of his work, strong and powerful design-orientated in his attempt to convey the quirkiness he often sees in landscapes and human situations around him. Many are painted direct from nature or from sketches that are worked on into large paintings at a later date, this very often gives them a certain zest which otherwise not be there.

I have worked as a painter and Art Tutor for nearly 30 years, exhibiting widely in Essex over that time.

The advent of digital photography influenced me to explore the qualities of optical mixing, perceiving colour variations in pixels or dots. I use only 3 colours plus white in my paintings, mixing to achieve a subtle harmony of colour and tone.

My subject matter is drawn from our local environment, but particularly the Estuary. My aim is to emulate the ethereal qualities of light and the ever changing patterns in Nature.

I am interested in people’s stories. There is a line in the film Shadowlands: ‘We read to know we are not alone’. Visual art also has the potential to create a connection with and amongst our fellow human beings, to speak of those experiences which, though not ‘everyday’, may nonetheless be ‘common’ to many. More importantly, there is also the potential to provide an insight into those less familiar human experiences, such as mental illness, which the majority would often rather shy away from.

Venue 23: Mark Taylor | Photographer

My passion is telling Leigh’s story through its people. The Old Town has a wonderful melting pot of characters, from those living along the atmospheric streets and working the wharves to the trippers here for the beach or a lunch of cockles outside the Billet.

This diverse, ever-changing cast provide Leigh’s rhythm just as much as the ebb and flow of the tide. I try to capture the Old Town’s mood in what Henri Cartier-Bresson called “decisive moments” — everyday scenes with special significance.

The challenge is to record these split-second dramas in compositions which show familiar haunts in a new light.

Venue 24: Victoria Sills | Mixed Media/Textiles | New

Open: Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-4pm, Mon 10am-2:30pm, Tues 10am-4:30pm, Wed-Thurs 10am-5pm, Fri 10am-6pm.
Venue: Rebecca Ryther Make-Up, 52 Broadway, SS9 1AG

Victoria uses a foundation of drawing and painting to develop images onto various textile surfaces. Recent work has focused on the natural world of plants and flowers. Embracing the fluidity of nature and the femininity of flowers, she has created a collection of sensual images that capture the short life of a bloom, or indeed that of a woman in her ‘prime’. A delicate silk covered with the hibiscus flower print echoes this message of temporariness. Viewers are encouraged to walk through the material allowing it to cover their face and skin. Both the fabric & print are gradually eroded and eventually destroyed.

I like to explore the motifs of figures, through the vigorous impasto oil painting technique and vivid colour combinations. I strive to evoke complex emotions with a visceral use of pure colours, often directly applied from the tube.

The rigid brushstrokes, finger strokes and pallet knife use, also contribute to the dynamic texture and form of my paintings, between figuration and an almost abstract-gestural style.

Although my broad, expressive brushwork do not display this influence, I am fascinated by the classical European tradition of Titian, Velasquez and Rembrandt.

My previous work as an architect and designer informs my work as an artist. I am still passionate about line, colour and sense of place, but what fascinates me most now, is the energy that is created and shared by model and artist. This combined energy, in turn, creates an alchemy of line and pigment that only appears when I work directly from life.
