I have taught art and textiles to a wide range of ages and for many years was Head of Art at a Sixth Form College. During that time, I have investigated self-directed themes and have accepted commissioned projects. I create my work by developing designs and compositions from drawings, photos and colour studies taken from my surroundings and travels.  My main medium is textiles and I enjoy working with handmade felt, hand and machine stitching and quilting.  During research and production new interests arise and lead to the next body of work that may involve mosaic or painting.

Venue 2: Nicola Parry | Photographer | New

Open: Sat-Sat 10am-5:30pm
Venue: Nic. Inc. 89 Leigh Road, SS9 1JL

My work has developed from a combination of my photographic interest in figural and figurative portraits and my love of the natural environment.

These images are different from many other photographers in that they are digital combinations of moments, places or the person I have captured. This allows for a more creative process and often leads me to a more abstract image than people would generally expect to come from a portrait photographer.

I work to a set of self-imposed rules allowing only specific manipulations and limited images. This forces me to focus on specific elements and processes and to be creative in building the image, emotion or mood I wish to convey within the guidelines I have set for myself.

As Giclée prints on textured fine art paper, the final images are more painterly in quality than the original photographs the works were created from and are not always immediately identifiable as works of photography.

We have visual conversations among ourselves using creative sketchbooks to communicate ideas. We work with themes to relinquish control and to silence our inner critics. Our books are places to take risks, allowing for happy accidents to freely happen, along with self-revelatory unconscious intentions. We love the synergy of bouncing ideas off each other and it continually surprises us how each artist takes one idea and interprets it in a distinct way. Our books take a tangible form and, uniquely, we want our audience to engage with them by looking through, touching the pages, and becoming part of the conversation.

I’m a professional photographer; I also write and perform songs, something I would never have started doing without the encouragement and opportunities afforded by the denizens of our local music scene.

Each of these portraits was a collaboration. The choice of location, outfit, and sense of what we wanted to convey were all decided on together by myself and each of the subjects. It has been so much fun tapping into the wealth of enthusiasm, creativity, talent and openness possessed by this really rather lovely bunch of people.

Hail Venus! Writer, musician and artist Zoë Howe presents an off-beat Dada-inspired celebration / satirisation of feminine symbolism, female power, fetishes and fantasies through the prism of the 'cosmic lovers': Venus and Mars. Zoë uses surrealist devices and games in her work, which is playful if often on the dark side, and she is inspired by vintage glamour, dreams and nostalgia, the heavens, the Thames Delta and cats. (She is aware this sounds like a lyric from 'Reasons to Be Cheerful Pt 3'). She is proud to be exhibiting in the Leigh Art Trail for its 20th anniversary.

This work was created in the studio during the rigors of my recent Fine Art Degree, which challenged all my previous ideas. On the subject of abjection and biomorphism, I found that making three dimensional art with mixed media (recyclables, paper, cardboard and metal) produced more spontaneity and the development of increasingly larger tactile forms. My art process is primarily led by my materials which I work repetitively by hand to vigorously reveal a tactile metamorphosis. I want my art to have a strong relationship to the crux of life and to be felt as well as seen.

I am an illustrator who has been engrossed in one form of art or another from a very young age. I love the creative process that is required to produce a truly outstanding piece of work and the way it makes me feel. Having said that, I have had a couple of years break mainly due to family bereavement, but now, am ready to start again and what better way than with the Leigh Art Trail and by producing a portrait of my dad that I am truly proud of.

I have exhibited and sold my work in the past at the various venues, such as Westcliff Art Trail, Beecroft Gallery, Village Green and Southend Library. Over the last couple of years though I have taken a step back from exhibiting due to personal reasons however I now feel it is the right time for me to start again and I feel very positive about the future and have also embarked on a degree in Illustration with the OCA.

The discarded and often overlooked in our daily environments are important to me. The structures I see and the objects that I find are constantly rediscovered in my work. Everything around us has a certain beauty, a quality of its own, designed, crafted or engineered for a particular purpose that may now have passed. These fragments, shapes, lines and surfaces that I am fascinated by present endless possibilities and form these new and unique compositions.

Process is paramount and the physicality of building, layering, arranging, reusing and recycling materials has become a central part of my practice.

Open: Sat-Sat 10:30am–5pm
Venue: miss annabel dee* gallery & studios, 153 Leigh Road, SS9 1JF

The guiding principle behind Julie’s work is not an intellectual scrutiny of objects but a sense-driven, textural communication, aiming to activate the senses through the sensuality of the form and the materials. The relationship between the forms is significant and the vessels are often arranged in small groups.

“To me the term ‘haptic’ which derives from an Ancient Greek word describing ‘the texture, the feel and the pleasure of touching’ perfectly describes the essence of my work and my creative approach to making.

Julie graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 with a First Class Honours Degree in Ceramic Design.

Contemporary mixed media mosaics for the home and garden.

"20 years ago I was living just off of Leigh Broadway and visited the first ever Leigh Art Trail. The following year I decided to get involved with this fantastic community event, and having recently graduated from Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design, I felt that Leigh was a place that I could continue to grow. Along with fellow artists Tricia North, Tessa Frampton and Yvonne Pedretti, we created Studio 12, Leighcliff Buildings- this was to become a wonderful hub of creativity.

For several years I took on my fair share of the running, distribution and funding application process etc. of the Leigh Art Trail. It was great to work behind the scenes, building it from strength to strength and having the opportunity to exhibit my work and to engage with the Leigh community. In 2007 we moved to Surrey for my husband’s work. It was with great sadness to leave family, friends and the unique creative town of Leigh-on-Sea. My young family and teaching commitments in Surrey have kept me very busy, but I have continued to create and develop my artwork.

I am thrilled and honoured to have been invited back for the 20th anniversary of the Leigh Art Trail. I feel like I am ‘coming home’ to a very special place and a very special event."

Denise Jaques is the winner of Surrey Artist of the Year 2016 and is a member of BAMM (British Association for Modern Mosaics).

I am a mixed media artist with a passion for diversity, colour and texture, I strive to produce Individual pieces that are calm, contemplative and create an atmosphere in the space in which they are set.

In the last few years I have found a love for hand building with clay, my most recent work has been inspired by the human form and the way it changes over time.

Through university my work was concerned with the notion of masculinity in wider culture and my dissertation reflected this study, concentrating on the world of cinema. An investigation into the mechanics of the use of collage as medium in accompaniment to painting also paralleled this theme. My paintings are now a depiction of a better understanding of paint and a return to a more organic subject; looking outward rather than in. Having lived in Leigh-on-Sea my entire life; I intend to communicate an essence of home. My appreciation for the daily phenomenon of landscape we are witness to grows exponentially.

Venue 15: Simon Feather | Painter

Open: Sat-Sat 10am-5pm. Late night Thurs ‘til 8:30pm
Studio 12, Leighcliff Buildings, 12 Leighcliff Road, SS9 1PR www.simonfeather.wix.com/simonfeatherartist

My main love is abstract art. For me, abstract art is a constant challenge to create stimulating images that excite my eye and hopefully engage the viewer in some way.  I like to explore shape, colour and the effect of marks and lines in my compositions; often working, layering and repainting until something occurs on the surface that appeals to me and I am pleased with.

Venue 15: Tessa Frampton | Painter

Open: Sat-Sat 10am-5pm. Late night Thurs ‘til 8:30pm
Studio 12, Leighcliff Buildings, 12 Leighcliff Road, SS9 1PR
www.taframpton.com

My paintings use a method of work involving scratching in to gesso and tinting with oil paint. The effect is a little like etching; I fill the scratches with paint to give the effect of drawn lines. My inspiration continues to be about the natural world and especially things I see walking in Hullbridge and whilst on holiday. I am drawn to winter landscape the colour and rawness of the Essex countryside, especially the salt marshes with their abundant bird life. I collect information through my sketchbooks and photographs also memories of what it feels like to be there. I am always excited with the thought of exploring what I see through different mediums.

Amy is a painter and designer whose work explores the emotive qualities of colour, texture and nostalgia.

Her practice is dedicated to blurring the boundaries between painting and design. She loves to experiment with textural painting, collage and text to create inquisitive designs that are visually captivating and curious to the eye. Nostalgia fills her imagination, and daily life is where Amy seeks her inspiration.  Using art as a source of soul-food and energy, her expressive painting technique embodies how she is feeling and ‘experiencing’ life at the time of creation. One year, she may be travelling. The next, she might be living in New Zealand. This year, Amy is focusing on the theme of ‘home’ to coincide with her current project where she is laying down roots and building a life and creative business with her kiwi nomad here, in Leigh-on-Sea.
