I am a self-taught embroidery artist who loves using such an ancient craft to look at modern day life, language, politics and images. My background in Floristry influences my work and I am continuously inspired by nature. For this year’s Art Trail, I have been looking at modern day language and slang.

I am interested in people’s stories. There is a line in the film Shadowlands: ‘We read to know we are not alone’. Visual art also has the potential to create a connection with and amongst our fellow human beings, to speak of those experiences which, though not ‘everyday’, may nonetheless be ‘common’ to many. More importantly, there is also the potential to provide an insight into those less familiar human experiences, such as mental illness, which the majority would often rather shy away from.

Venue 23: Mark Taylor | Photographer

Venue: BelleRose Flower Boutique, 64 Broadway, SS9 1AE

My passion is telling Leigh’s story through its people. The Old Town has a wonderful melting pot of characters, from those living along the atmospheric streets and working the wharves to the trippers here for the beach or a lunch of cockles outside the Billet.

This diverse, ever-changing cast provide Leigh’s rhythm just as much as the ebb and flow of the tide. I try to capture the Old Town’s mood in what Henri Cartier-Bresson called “decisive moments” — everyday scenes with special significance.

The challenge is to record these split-second dramas in compositions which show familiar haunts in a new light.

Venue 24: Victoria Sills | Mixed Media/Textiles | New

Open: Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-4pm, Mon 10am-2:30pm, Tues 10am-4:30pm, Wed-Thurs 10am-5pm, Fri 10am-6pm.
Venue: Rebecca Ryther Make-Up, 52 Broadway, SS9 1AG

Victoria uses a foundation of drawing and painting to develop images onto various textile surfaces. Recent work has focused on the natural world of plants and flowers. Embracing the fluidity of nature and the femininity of flowers, she has created a collection of sensual images that capture the short life of a bloom, or indeed that of a woman in her ‘prime’. A delicate silk covered with the hibiscus flower print echoes this message of temporariness. Viewers are encouraged to walk through the material allowing it to cover their face and skin. Both the fabric & print are gradually eroded and eventually destroyed.

Venue 25: Natasha Kamburova | Fine Art

Open: Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-1pm, Mon-Fri 8:30am-6:30pm.
Venue: Scott and Stapleton, 42 Broadway, SS9 1AJ

I like to explore the motifs of figures, through the vigorous impasto oil painting technique and vivid colour combinations. I strive to evoke complex emotions with a visceral use of pure colours, often directly applied from the tube.

The rigid brushstrokes, finger strokes and pallet knife use, also contribute to the dynamic texture and form of my paintings, between figuration and an almost abstract-gestural style.

Although my broad, expressive brushwork do not display this influence, I am fascinated by the classical European tradition of Titian, Velasquez and Rembrandt.

I am a local Art teacher and a practising Artist. I have always been interested in quick continuous line with pen and pencil and the freedom from this. I am now thoroughly enjoying experimenting with a sewing machine and the expressive use of colour using my photographs from our local seascape.

My previous work as an architect and designer informs my work as an artist. I am still passionate about line, colour and sense of place, but what fascinates me most now, is the energy that is created and shared by model and artist. This combined energy, in turn, creates an alchemy of line and pigment that only appears when I work directly from life.

My work employs a strong graphic style & literal narrative of subjects that I illustrate from the world around me. Careful composition & experimentation with a mix of traditional painting, drawing styles & media are interwoven with digital rendering to provide accessible & easily understandable compositions. Simple, unambiguous images packed with detail characterise the work I produce. I exhibit signed & numbered illustration prints during the trail week, which focus almost exclusively on Leigh-on-sea & the town's familiar sites and views across the Thames estuary.

An illustrator, printmaker and book artist, I’m inspired by people and their stories – real, or imaginary. I draw every day in my sketchbook – from life, imagination, old books and films, or from found photographs. From these drawings I make series of screenprints and paintings, or handmade books and zines. Ongoing themes include alien abduction, forgotten aunties, and yearnings for different worlds.

Having discovered a love for photography in 2015, I've covered subjects as diverse as London street life, the Essex coastline and custom motorcycles. In 2016 I made the decision undertake volunteer work, spending time in Nepal capturing the essence of rural village life, before travelling in Northern India, which provided wonderful subjects with which to work. I later traveled overland by car from London to Russia through Turkey, Central Asia and Mongolia photographing all aspects of life on the road from vast deserts to mountain passes and the nomadic people of the Mongolian Steppe.

Venue 32: John Adams | Mixed Media

Open: Sat-Sat 10am to 4pm except services.

I have been working with mixed media for many years; my work has always reflected  my experiences throughout this time. I am a teacher of art and photography and am currently artist in residence at Belfairs Academy. My art is not bound by convention and although I have many influences I like the idea that my work is always exploratory and and ideas can take many forms. I am always looking for new materials and objects that can be used in my assemblages and I often combine photography in different ways, perhaps using a documentary approach or even photogenic drawings.

Venue 33: Claire Bartlett | Visual Artist | New

Open: Mon-Sat 9:30am-5pm
Venue: Puddle & Goose, 1-3 Broadway West, SS9 2BZ

After helping set up a community arts Centre in the 70`s I took my degree at Newcastle upon Tyne and worked as a Community Artist for many years.

Among other projects, I designed for theatre companies, made giant structures with Welfare State International and made Bunraku puppets with Puppets and People, while also working in the community with youth groups, young offenders and schools in Visual and Performing Art.

Since moving to Southend some 15 years ago, I have set up and run Southend Youth Arts, which provides arts opportunities for young people and also for access groups. Currently I have largely retired from community arts work to concentrate on my own Visual Art practice. I also run art classes for adults.

I am using watercolour techniques and mixed media to explore images that you see in my work and celebrate the colour and diversity of life.

My aim now is to share the joy and wellbeing that art brings through my teaching practice, and to develop my own art.
