My paintings this year mainly celebrate the coastal town in which I live and I've also included a few paintings from a trip I made to Italy last year.  I try to evoke something of the atmosphere of the places visit and I enjoy painting throughout the seasons and at different times of the day.

The Obsessive Art of Diary Keeping - Gwen's father wrote a diary every day. Near the end of his life she asked if she could be custodian of these personal records and was disappointed to find that they revealed so very little. Determined to find an alternative and individual approach to her own diary keeping - and one that does not rely on words alone to record a life lived - Gwen collaged, edited and collated four small artist-made diaries (2012 - 2015)

The guiding principle or philosophy behind my work is not an intellectual scrutiny of objects but a sense-driven, textural communication, aiming to activate the senses through the sensuality of the form and the materials incorporated. To me the term and the concept ‘haptic’ which derives from an Ancient Greek word describing ‘the texture, the feel and the pleasure of touching’ perfectly describes the essence of my work and my creative approach to design which originates in the senses.

I am a painter working in oils and mixed media. I have been working on to paper, using various drawing material to create immediacy and energy to the work. My influences come from looking at sketchbooks and the freshness sketching gives to the image. I have made my paintings in response to walks in the countryside; locally and on holiday I sketch and remember trying to convey the experience. I have also created unique books with painted covers; they have Coptic stitched sections of plain cartridge paper.

My main love is abstract art. For me, abstract art is a constant challenge to create stimulating images that excite my eye and hopefully engage the viewer in some way.  I like to explore shape, colour and the effect of marks and lines in my compositions; often working, layering and repainting until something occurs on the surface that appeals to me and I am pleased with.

I am a potter who works from a purpose built studio at home. My pots are hand built using coils and decorated with coloured burnished slips and incising techniques. My interest with the natural environment provides much of my inspiration. For this year I have created a memory pot in my brothers name using both symbolic and graphic images showing some times we shared. Other pots are inspired by the floral and organic stylistic elements of art nouveau.

Life before stadiums… Travel my first photographic passion. Many years ago I started photographing ‘21st Century Cathedrals’ otherwise known as football stadiums. I exhibited the first results many years ago during the Leigh Art Trail and have done so ever since, the project is now a full time occupation. This year I would like to reconnect with my first photographic passion… travel photography. I will show both new and unseen images and photographs that I first exhibited back in 1998 (my first ever Art Trail). Scenes from Leigh on sea, London, New York and beyond will be included within the show.

Contemporary fine silver jewellery that incorporates sculptural shapes that is both tactile and easy to wear. I design and create contemporary fine silver jewellery using precious metal clay (PMC). This 21st century material allows me to explore and create textural and organic designs with inspiration taken from the marine surroundings of my hometown of Leigh-on-Sea. I continue to be fascinated by the ‘mermaid tears’ of sea glass found on long leisurely beach walks. For the 2016 trail I will be creating one-off pieces that enable an exploration of textured silver and encapsulate an essence of the sea.

My work in recent years has become centred on the area known as Two Tree Island. This is an area rich in wildlife and wonderful views out to the Estuary or back towards Leigh on Sea. I spend a good deal of time walking and sketching and I often begin paintings out in the location of the Island. I love the rhythms and seasons and the quiet stillness of winter. The ever changing light never fails to move me when I am and it is no accident that as a painter it has become constant theme for me.

The theme that informs my work is the representation of the male image in modern visual culture. I have sought to become fully immersed in the mechanisms present in such imagery which operate to apprehend spectator and deliver the harangue of consumption. I have come to understand the way in which gaze, posture and characterization dictate the way in which we view these images. Without dissection they seep unnoticeably into our shared subconscious. My work is an attempt to dilute this process of perception and to interrupt something of the dream-like interaction that we experience with the ‘male icon’.

I am a mixed media artist focusing on colour and texture with clay forms, I have over the last few years found a love for hand building with clay. My aim is to produce work that is calm, contemplative and creates an atmosphere in the space in which it is set.  This body of work is “my bandage people” I am working with the human form, folding and wrapping strips of clay to produce shapes and forms. I was a winner for the SACC competition, my prize was to display my next body of work at the 2016 Leigh Art Trail.
